PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

– GRAY BRIDWELL

…well therein lies the problem. There isn’t a president’s message this month. Word is that both the prez and vipe are AWOL. Here I am, the new guy, trying to put my first newsletter together and I get strapped with another handicap. My guess is that they’re cruising around in seventy degree air while I’m stuck down here on the ground pecking on a keyboard. If any of you spot the missing pair, please report their whereabouts to the sergeant-at-arms.

***************

NO BREAKFAST THIS MONTH

The regular monthly breakfast at the Pride hangar will not be held this month. Instead, donuts and other goodies will be served at the TSTC hangar on the 14th, which is Young Eagles Day. See ya’ there.

HANGAR LEASE READY FOR REVIEW

The City of Abilene has released the Hangar Lease Agreement to the Chapter. If you currently lease one of the EAA Chapter 471 T-hangars, it is important that you review the new lease agreement as soon as possible. A copy of the agreement will be at the TSTC hangar during Young Eagles for review.

NEWSLETTER DUTIES CHANGE

-Sam Evans-

As most of you know, Billy Tucker has been the publisher / editor of our monthly newsletter, Hangar Flyin’. He has been a major contributor and has done a super job. At the end of May, Billy left for New Mexico to care for his mother. He will be there for much of the summer.

Gray asked if I could help publish the newsletter, at least while Billy is out of town. I accepted the request and then met with Billy to get all the particulars of publishing the newsletter. I’m at a huge disadvantage since I’m not a college English professor. But, I hope I can produce the quality of work that you are accustomed to. With that said, I’ll apologize now for any goof-ups that I make.

NEWSLETTER ARTICLES NEEDED

Publishing a monthly newsletter isn’t too hard, that is if there is something to print. As always, we appreciate any newsworthy information and pictures that you would like to submit for publication in the newsletter. You can e-mail articles and pictures to Gray or me.

Carroll Bird’s daughter is ready to sell his RV-4. She is asking $60,000 for it. This will be a great flying machine for the next owner. Pass the word around; we need to keep it in the chapter or close to home.

EAA CHAPTER 471

YOUNG EAGLES DAY

JUNE 14th, 2003

Here we are again at our annual Young Eagles Day event for our EAA Chapter 471. This year has special meaning for us and for EAA and the entire aviation world as a whole. As you all are aware this is the Centennial year of powered flight when Orville and Wilbur Wright made their first powered flight in the Wright Flyer and what a great celebration we are going to have. Saturday, June 14th is the National EAA Young Eagles Day and we are going to celebrate this wonderful event in unison with all other EAA Chapters throughout the world. We will need the help of everyone in the Chapter to make this a success from registration to marshaller’s to everyone providing security to the pilots who donated their time and airplanes.

We are looking forward to giving an opportunity to our youth to experience powered flight with your support and enthusiasm. This year we will be working out of the Texas State Technical College West Texas (TSTC) hangar. Gray and I have come up with the best solution for crowd control and comfort for all by operating out of the TSTC hangar. We will open up the hangar doors and setup tables for registration for an easier flow to the flight line. We will also have access to restrooms, break room, and a classroom for the pilot briefing. This will be a great improvement we hope over past years with little or no facilities.

David Vargo from Abilene Aero will be setting up a magnificent military display of aircraft models and other military memorabilia from the WWII era through Desert Storm. A must see for all to enjoy. He has put in a great deal of time and effort to acquire all that he has to display. He will be utilizing five tables for his display so you know there will be quite a bit to see. His military display will be a nice attraction for our Young Eagles to enjoy while they wait for their flights.

The pilot briefing will be held at 0830 Saturday morning of June 14th. I will also be handing out procedures and Young Eagles codes for the Young Eagles flights so there will not be any confusion as to how the route will be flown and what runways we will be using. My wife, Debbie, has volunteered to bring donuts, breakfast burritos, juice and water for breakfast. Coffee will be available for you coffee drinkers. Lunch will be provided and will probably be pizzas.

I’ll need help setting up on Friday, June 13th at 4:00pm at TSTC. We will need to set up

2-3 tables with chairs all provided by TSTC so we won’t have to truck in any of ours. We’ll also need to setup five tables for David Vargo’s display I’ll also need to move some TSTC airplanes back so there will be room to setup our area. We’ll have power available for computers and there will be bathroom facilities as well.

Thanks to everyone for your help, support, and dedication to a great cause for the youth in our community. They will remember this day as one of the best in their youth thanks to you.

BELOW ARE A LIST OF ITEMS WE LEARNED FROM PAST YEARS EVENTS AND TRY TO INCOPRATE THEM INTO EACH SUBSEQUENT YEARS EVENTS. EACH YEAR WE GET BETTER AND BETTER THANKS TO YOU ALL.

  1. Cutoff crowd at designated stop time. We closed the gate at 3:00pm and continued flying the rest of the Young Eagles until the line was complete.
  2. Allow kids ONLY 8-17 to fly.
  3. If a child is too scared to fly without a parent, the child should not fly.
  4. Do not fly anyone other than YE’s as this program is for he/she only. If you have a friend who just wants to fly, have them wait until the event is over. We’re there to fly YE’s only.
  5. Do not have kids on or near aircraft during refueling.
  6. Make announcement on for parents to closely supervise their kids so they don’t get hurt.
  7. Keep unsupervised kids out of the registration hangar so they don’t run around planes.
  8. Have PA system, cord, table, and radio/stereo setup the am of YE.
  9. Use the PA system to make announcements and to play music next time.
  10. Turn transponders on ALT before takeoff and STBY after landing.
  11. Get suntan lotion for ground crews, especially marshaller’s.
  12. The PowerPoint pilot briefing worked well.
  13. List of pilots with their squawk codes on computer for briefing worked.
  14. Initialing that pilots had the briefing worked well. Also counted as a sign in sheet.
  15. Brief pilots in advance that Abilene Regional is in Class-C airspace and requires radio’s and transponders to fly the YE route around the city.
  16. Follow the marshaller’s instructions explicitly. They have the big picture on the line.
  17. Make copies of squawk codes for pilots so they won’t have to write them down.
  18. Making copies of YE procedures worked well for each pilot for pilot briefing.
  19. Setting up fuel prior to event and getting discount was good idea.
  20. Have tables and chairs pre-positioned the evening before for the registration worked well.
  21. Have plenty of cold water in chest available for YE pilots and staff.
  22. Have lunch available at registration hangar for pilots so they can take a break.
  23. Contact Bobby Nichols a day after the event to get official numbers of YE’s flown and how many each pilot flew during the event.
  24. Have tents setup for waiting line to shade those that have been waiting longest and close to flying.
  25. Possibly a fundraising section with hats and drinking water instead of them taking our water.
